Streetwise Photos
Here are some photos that are related to Russ's book, Streetwise: Mafia Memoirs.
The first photo is of Alia, Sicily. It's the ancestral town of the Vassallo family. Rosolino Vassallo's family emigrated to New Orleans in the late 1890s and in 1900 Rosolino went back to Alia to marry Concetta.
The second photo is of Rosolino Vassallo, Russ's grandfather. He was a mafia boss in Newark, New Jersey, while Russ was growing up.
The third photo is of the house in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, that Rosolino built. The property has now become a protected wetland and the house is gone.
The next photo is of the parking area on the farm in Basking Ridge. On certain days long lines of limousines would pull up and park there.
The family photo was taken on Anthony Vassallo's wedding day in 1932. For being in the midst of the Depression the Vassallo family was doing rather well, don't you think?
The final photo is of Russ and his grandfather, Rosolino.
